Addresses

Most Internet sites have, or are part of, a domain. The name of that domain provides the location of a particular computer, the address of where it 'lives' on the Internet.

An imaginary web site has a domain name of:

example-site-name.com.au

This address is decoded by reading from right to left.

The au in the domain name indicates this is an Australian Internet site. The Net uses standard country codes:

uk United Kingdom
de Germany
None USA or Global

The com part of the address designates example-site-name as a commercial or business organisation. This is also part of an international standard.

edu Educational Institutions
gov Government Bodies
mil Military Defence Forces
org Non-Profit or Community Groups
net Networks

The final component of the address is the name of the organisation, in this case example-site-name.

Put them all together and you have got... example-site-name.com.au
