Your Nickname

Once you have installed and launched the IRC client for the first time, you will need to enter some basic details about yourself and how you wish to connect to IRC.

You begin with your name and e-mail address. If you prefer not to give out these details you could use a fake name and e-mail address. This will not guarantee absolute anonymity but ensures that your basic details are private. On the other hand, if you use a fake name there will be no way for anyone to contact you once you logoff and the chance to form a friendship may be lost.

Your nickname or nick is your online name, a pseudonym of up to nine letters that can be anything you wish. If you join a channel where you preferred nickname is being used, you will have to sign on with something else. Most IRC clients ask for an alternate nickname for this reason.
