WAIS stands for Wide Area Information Server. 

WAIS, was a tool used for extracting information from databases and catalogues. If you tried to search any one of these databases yourself, you found each had its own particular set of search rules. WAIS let you perform a search without knowing the particular techniques or commands needed by each database or catalogue.
