Plugins

Plug-ins were add-on pieces of software that could extend the functions of compatible Web browsers.

Commonly used plugins included...

• Acrobat Reader Plugin
• Flash
• Shockwave
• Java Plugin
• Quicktime Plugin

As well as plugins, Microsoft used an alternative proprietary technology called ActiveX to provide extensions for Internet Explorer.

The use of plugins in web browsers has been discontinued.
